Progress of a trompe l’oeil mural

Posted on October 24th, 2012

I’ve decided to write about the progress of a mural from concept/design to installation on a wall – in this case, the wall of a well known paint supplier in Dublin – Colortrend.

My brief was to create an interesting ‘trompe l’oeil’ view into a room, rather than the classic view out of a room, showing different painted surfaces . I added the idea of a painter and decorator continuing to decorate the exterior wall with ‘Colortrend’ materials.

I offered a practical solution to weather problems: paint a small scale original for photography and subsequent reproduction by a printer. The printer would install the actual mural in situ which would take only a short time. I like this method! The print is an original but for exterior murals, it offers the additional comfort to the client of being able to replace any damage.

Here’s a photo of me starting the painting in the studio:

I will be adding to this blog over the next few days.

If you’re interested…. keep an eye open!
